School holidays are the perfect time to embark on a family adventure, and Plantation Island Resort in Fiji is an idyllic destination that promises fun for those traveling with young ones, or those still young at heart.
It can seem daunting, but we know from the thousands of happy people that have stayed and played with us that travelling with kids can be a delightful experience… with a little preparation and the right tips.
So, here’s a simple, back to basics guide to ensure that your Fijian family holiday goes smoothly so that everyone (mum and dad included!) has a fantastic time.
But first – why does everyone rave so much about Fiji for families in the first place?
It’s A Family-Friendly Paradise
Fiji is renowned for its exceptional hospitality towards families. Stories of the island’s warmth and beauty, and the ease with which childcare is shared among parents, are often recounted with amazement. And with good reason! When adults think of Fiji, they imagine secluded islands in the South Pacific. And there is plenty of opportunity to do that on Plantation Island. However, children need more excitement and activities, and our resort knows just how to deliver the action, depending on your children’s ages and interests.
The Mamanuca Islands are the perfect spot for a family holiday in Fiji, providing fun for younger kids and thrilling adventures for older children. Here’s your guide to family travel in Fiji – from boarding your flight to enjoying some island time respite!
-
Pack Snacks and Entertainment for the Plane
Keep your kids happy and hydrated with their favourite snacks and drinks. Pack a variety of options to keep them engaged and satisfied during the flight. Bring along books, fidgets and new games or toys they haven’t seen before. These can keep them entertained and excited, making the journey more enjoyable. Choose inexpensive items that you won’t mind losing if they drop between the seats.
-
Essential Packing
Don’t forget to pack the essentials like sunscreen (the tropical sun can be intense, so pack extra to keep everyone protected), insect repellent, swimwear, hats, toiletries, and comfortable shoes for the whole family. Also, bring any necessary medications or medical supplies, including over-the-counter remedies for common ailments. Antihistamine cream is also a game-changer for any itchy bites your kids might get. It can quickly relieve discomfort and prevent scratching.
-
Stay Hydrated and Healthy
Ensure your children drink lots of water and eat regularly to stay hydrated and energised. The hot climate can tire them out quickly. Packing hydrolyte can prove helpful too. In case anyone falls ill, there is of course a handy Medical Centre near Reception for your convenience.
-
Enjoy the Activities and Kids Club
Check out the resort’s activities program to keep all ages entertained. The Kids Club is free for children aged 4-12 years, providing a variety of fun activities. Children under 4 can attend the Kids Club with a guardian or babysitter.
If you have older children there is also the Lairo Club teens program, suitable for ages 12-16 years.
Or you’ll find a huge selection of complimentary activities on the water and land that kids can do on their own or as a family.
-
Convenience for Parents
Travelling with a baby? You can hire a microwave to heat baby bottles or a stroller to get around easily. Just ask at Reception on arrival. You can take advantage of affordable babysitting services to enjoy some adult time, with babysitting is available for just FJ$15 per hour. Whether it’s for a massage, a kid-free dinner, or a trip out to Cloud 9, you’ll appreciate the break, and your kids will love the friendly Fijian caregivers.
-
Dining and Spending
Want the good news or the great news? All kids aged 0-11 years eat free at Plantation Island Resort. Yes! Dining with parents at any of the restaurants includes a free kids combo menu, or there’s a kids buffet available at the Kids Club dining room from 5:30pm-7:30pm daily. And the great news. You can leave your wallet in the safe, because the resort operates on a cash-free basis. You can simply charge expenses back to your room or use your credit card at all outlets.
-
Jungle Water Park
Plantation Island’s exhilarating Jungle Water Park is now open, offering next-level family fun. The aquatic playground includes thrilling slides, bouncy trampolines, and a Tarzan-style water swing. The original, popular inflatable park is still available too, but the new Jungle Water Park is a great alternative at low tide when the inflatable park can’t be used. Book 60-minute slots for just FJ$10 per person. Safety is a priority; all participants must watch a safety video and sign a disclaimer. Lifeguards are always on duty to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
-
Batabata Milkbar
After a day on the water, it’s time to treat yourself at Plantation Island’s fresh and fabulous new Batabata Milkbar. Add a dash of delicious to your day with refreshing ice creams, milkshakes, and oh-so-tasty hot donuts. Consider it a literal cherry on top of an already unbeatable experience on Plantation Island Resort. Someone dairy free? No worries, the mango passionfruit flavour is a dairy free fave with families. Batabata is conveniently open every day from 11am to 9pm – because hey, it’s always a good time for a treat on holidays.
-
Kids Eat & Transfer Free Offer
Kids aged 0-11 years eat free from the kids’ menu when dining with two paying adults, or from the designated kids’ buffet. All kids aged 0-11 years travel free on the Malolo Cat ferry at designated times when traveling with a parent or guardian. Plus, you don’t need to pay for the kids if they are under 12, as the room rate allows two kids to eat and stay free when there are two adults.
-
Pre or Post-Island Stay
If you have time before your arrival transfer to the island or before your flight, consider spending time at Fiji Gateway Hotel. Located just 300 meters from Nadi Airport, it offers a complimentary shuttle bus transfer. The day-pass cost is FJ$40 per adult and FJ$20 per child, which is credited to your account for use on food and beverages. Enjoy a last dip in the pool, use the gym or tennis court, or just relax. Towels and showers are available, making it a great way to start or finish your Fiji adventure.
Bonus BULA fun on School Holidays
Dolphin Tour: Don’t miss the chance to take a dolphin tour. Seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a magical experience for the whole family.
Snorkelling at Pinnacle Reef: Explore nearby sights like Pinnacle Reef, where the coral and fish spotting is amazing. This is a must-do activity for families who love marine life. Or alternatively, for a cost free experience, simply step off the beach to explore Plantation’s own underwater museum offshore. Close and convenient snorkelling for families.
Shell Village Tour: School might be out – but the learning doesn’t have to stop. Why not take the family on a Shell Village Tour to experience the local culture and crafts of Malolo Island’s local Fijian community. It’s a wonderful way to learn about Fijian traditions, met some locals and let the kids pick up some unique souvenirs with their pocket money.
Island-Style Hair Braiding: It might be time for your kids to let their hair down on school holidays – but no one actually likes battling with the brush to manage the inevitable knots that come with it. One suggestion is to let your kids embrace the island vibe with hair braiding at Totoka Hair & Beauty. It’s a fun way to get into the holiday spirit and they’ll love their new island-style look.
Final Tips
Birthday Celebrations: Celebrating a birthday? Head to the booking office to order a cake. They have all the details you need to pay and order the cake for your special day. Chocolate, vanilla and even red velvet cakes are on the Bula bakery birthday menu.
Making the Most of Early Arrivals and Late Departures
Arriving early, before you can check into your room? No problem! Pack a carry bag with your swimsuit and an extra set of clothes. Take a quick swim, explore the resort, and have some lunch – your room will be ready before you know it. The same goes for departure time. If you’re waiting for your transfer after checkout, pack a separate bag so you can swim until your Malolo Cat ferry transfer is due to leave.
Stay Connected and Informed: Join the “We Love Plantation” Facebook group to connect with other travellers and get answers to common questions. It’s a great resource for tips and advice from fellow families.
From packing essentials to taking advantage of the resort’s facilities, you’re all set for an unforgettable adventure in Fiji. Happy travels!
