Forget the fireworks and champagne—Fiji does New Year in a way that’s all about gratitude, togetherness, and, yes, a little bit of water fun. While the rest of the world might be busy setting personal resolutions and stressing about gym memberships, Fijians are celebrating what really matters: a fresh start, a full belly, and good company. So, if you are lucky enough to be in Fiji for the big day, get ready to dive into a New Year celebration like no other.

In Fiji, the New Year isn’t just about watching the clock strike midnight. It’s about welcoming the new year with open arms and big hearts, surrounded by family, friends, and a whole lot of kava. Forget the solo goals, the “new year, new me” mentality—it’s all about the collective “we” and making sure everyone is part of the celebration.

Fijian Traditions: Gratitude, Feasts, and a Little Dance

The celebrations in Fiji are rooted in spirituality and community. Many Fijians start the night by heading to church to give thanks for another year of life and pray for good things to come. After the service, it’s time for a Yaqona ceremony—a fancy name for the kava ritual, where everyone gets together, shares the traditional drink, and raises a glass (or a coconut shell) to the new year ahead. It’s not just about the drink, though—it’s a symbol of peace, unity, and the bond of community. So, choose your own favourite drink to celebrate, sip it slow and savour the moment.

And let’s talk food—because if you’re in Fiji, you’re going to eat well. After the kava (ok, or beer and champagne), it’s time for a feast. We’re talking lovo (meat and veggies cooked in an earth oven), kokoda (raw fish salad), and cassava (that delicious root vegetable you’ll wonder why you haven’t had before). This is a time for sharing, laughing, and enjoying the simple things. There’s no better way to ring in the year than around a table full of food, family, and friends.

A Whole Week of Fun, Fun, and More Fun

But wait—Fiji doesn’t just celebrate on January 1st. Oh no, this is a whole week of partying, praying, and bonding. This week is called Na Macawa ni Veivakavoui (which, yes, means “week of spiritual renewal,” but we’ll just call it the Week of Fun). For the locals, it’s full of more church services, more kava drinking, and, you guessed it, even more feasting. It can also be noisy with the beat of the traditional Lali drums, tin cans and anything they can get their hands on that makes noise. It’s a spirited time full of fun and laughter. And the final Sunday? That’s when everyone gets together for Na Lotu ni Veiyalayalati, which is basically a church service where you make promises for a fresh start—and then everyone celebrates because a new year means a fresh chapter.

Get Ready to Get Wet!

Now, here’s where things get really fun. You might want to pack an extra swimsuit, because Fijians take their New Year’s celebrations to the next level with a splash! There’s a super cool water tradition where people drench each other in water or baby powder as a symbol of cleansing and renewal. It’s all about starting the year off with pure, joyful energy—and getting absolutely soaked in the process. Trust us, you don’t want to miss it, and you’ll be laughing and smiling the whole way through (just maybe leave your fancy clothes in the room!).

So, What Are You Waiting For?

If you’re heading to Fiji this January, you’re in for an unforgettable start to the New Year. Remember, it’s not about the big countdown or stress over resolutions—it’s about gratitude, togetherness, and making memories with the people you love (and some really good food). At Plantation Island Resort, you’ll get to experience all of this while soaking in the beauty of Fiji’s beaches, vibrant culture, and a whole lot of fun.

So, as we leap into 2025, why not try a bit of Fijian magic? Instead of worrying about personal goals, focus on connection, laughter, and the joy of starting fresh, together. And remember—don’t forget to pack that swimsuit, because things might get a little wet!
